The field notes

What it is

A cacao ceremony is a circle around a warm drink: ceremonial-grade cacao, minimally processed and prepared with intention, shared with song, silence or gentle guidance. The tradition draws on Maya and Mexica use of cacao as a ritual plant, and the modern circle is a soft, heart-opening practice rather than an intense one.

Quality is the quiet variable. Real ceremonial cacao is a different substance from cocoa powder, and the sourcing, who grew it and how it reached the cup, is part of what makes a ceremony honest.

What to expect
  • A shared cup of thick, unsweetened or lightly spiced cacao
  • Intention setting, and often song, breath or sound afterwards
  • Circles run one to three hours and stay gentle
  • No visions and no theatrics; cacao is a companion, not a portal
How we verify

We look for facilitators who can name their cacao source and their teacher, and who hold circles regularly rather than as a one-off add-on.

Cacao is a stimulant. Sensitivity varies, so ask the facilitator about dosage if you are unsure.
