The field notes
Ecstatic dance is facilitated free movement: no substances, no talking on the floor, no choreography, no one watching. A DJ builds a wave over roughly ninety minutes, and the room moves however it needs to. It is the least esoteric ceremony in this index and one of the most reliable.
The format lives or dies on how well the container is held: the opening circle, the floor agreements, and a facilitator who keeps the space what it promises to be.
- An opening circle and clear agreements before the music starts
- A single continuous wave of music, usually about 90 minutes
- Barefoot, water nearby, and a closing circle at the end
- No phones on the floor, anywhere that does it right
We look for a named facilitation team, a regular rhythm, and floor agreements that are stated out loud, not assumed.
